Persistent Myths and Negative Views of the History of Gambling in Casinos and Online

The United States government and its citizens have always held a mixed view of gambling. This includes betting on sports and lotteries. This has happened many times throughout American history. We are currently in the third wave of legalization. The Great Depression saw the third wave of legalization. Some states allowed certain betting types on horse races and off-track betting, while others banned gambling. In the 1930s, Nevada allowed casino gambling. This cycle picked up speed in the 1960s with the introduction of a state-sponsored lottery in New Hampshire.

Many types of gambling became legal and legitimate once the doors were opened to state lotteries. To generate tax revenue, governments allowed different kinds of gambling and participated in several plans to promote casinos and lotteries. New Jersey opened legal casinos in 1970, and Indian tribal lands were granted the right to build them in the 1980s.

Iowa opened riverboat gambling in the 1990s. Several other states then allowed legal gambling. Today, 48 of 50 US states allow commercial gambling. Three out of five federally owned territories also allow it. Utah and Hawaii are the only exceptions. Hawaii even allows social gaming but doesn't allow gambling at the state or local level Sweden casinos.

The only thing that the US must overcome is legalizing offshore casinos in the country. There are thousands of online gambling websites, many of which are based overseas. The global trend is to legalize, license, and regulate gambling institutions rather than ban or restrict trade. Likely, these companies will soon be legalized to operate in the United States of America.
